Fawley AFC v Petersfield Town
Posted by TommyH on 2007/9/6 19:27:55 (0 reads)

Petersfield Town travelled to Fawley top of the league after winning 4 of their first 5 games, however they would come unstuck thanks to a brace from the in-form Gibbons.

Fawley began sharply, and with Tom Hardiman replacing Dave Downie in midfield began passing the ball around well. However the main threat was Luke Walker who attacked the Petersfield left back throughout the game, and provided some excellent crosses.
Callum Earl and Matt Hardiman were running the midfield, and Earl had a couple of rasping shots, one which hit the outside of the post. The defence looked sharp and with the gap created by the midfield saw Kev Feeney make several advances into the Petersfield half to send in some good crosses one which was headed just over by Mockridge.
However after some good early work, Petersfield began to claw their way back into the game, and tested Dan Gilroy in goal through long-range shots and crosses.
And it was one of these crosses which would open the scoring and show just why Petersfield were sat top of the league. After some good work down the right flank, the ball was whipped in, and the Stockbridge left-winger who was not tracked tucked the ball into the roof of the net on the volley to give his team the lead.
It was harsh on Fawley who had nothing to show for their dominance for the majority of the first half and as the half-time whistle blew the Petersfield bench were the happier of the two camps.

However, Fawley began the second half at a high tempo and began to put the pressure on the Petersfield defence. Walker continued to cause trouble and the Fawley midfield worked hard to thwart any Stockbridge attacks.
Then as Fawley had done the week before, they hit 2 goals within a minute.
The first came from a corner, and a superb ball found Gibbons unmarked in the box, and he dispatched his shot into the back of the net to the the delight of the home crowd.
Then moments after Petersfield kicked off, Fawley regained posession, and after a through ball found Gibbons, he remained calm to round the keeper, and then took his time in beating the re-treating Petersfield players on the line to put Fawley 2-1 up. It was no more than Fawley deserved for the effort they had put in.
However Petersfield weren't top of the league for nothing, and they came out fighting, and only an excellent save from the impressive Gilroy stopped them from equalising.
Then with 10 mins left a foul was needlessly given away on the edge of the area, however the Petersfield strikers effort rebounded off the bar and was cleared from danger.
Fawley introduced substitutes to replace the tired legs as the second half wore on, and always looked comfortable with Ealr and Harvey at the back and from there held on for a superb victory against a committed Petersfield team.

Blackfield and Langley V Fawley AFC
Posted by TommyH on 2007/9/6 19:27:30 (5 reads)

Danny Mockride scored his first goal of the season and then grabbed another a minute later to seal the points for Fawley in this local derby.

The game began brightly with both sides enjoying good possesion, however it was Blackfield who created the more clear-cut chances with Gilroy being forced into action with a couple of fine saves.
Fawley continued to battle and had a good share of the ball, however on 20 minutes after some good work from the Blackfield left-winger who had already delivered some good crosses, put another excellent ball in, and as the Blackfield Central Midfielder who had made a late run challenged for the ball with Kieran Earl, the ball ended up in the net to put Blackfield 1-0 up to the delight of their home fans. Whether Kieran Earl got the final touch or not, only he will know!

Fawley raised their game, and created a few good chances however Danny Gibbons could not punish the hard-working Blackfield defence.
Luke Walker was a constant threat, and it was his ball which allowed Mockridge to open his account for the season, and put the game level.
After good work, from M. Hardiman and Kev Feeney, Luke Walkers cross found Mockridge at the back post, and he was allowed the time and the room to head the ball into the bottom corner, with only a minute before half-time.
However, Fawley did not sit-back and wait for the half-time whistle, and when Callum Earl slid Mockridge through on goal only a few seconds after Blackfield had kicked off and given away posession, Mockridge's tidy left-footed finish decieved the Blackfield goalkeeper and put Fawley 2-1 up going into the break, no more than they had deserved.

The second half saw chances for both teams, with Gilroy again being called upon to help maintain Fawley's lead, however with Jimmy Dickens and Kieran Ealr at the back, they were never going to allow the Blackfield strikers a moments peace.
Kev Dawtry rang the changes and sent on fresh legs after 70 minutes, and although both sides created openings, none were finished off, and on a hot day, and after a late Blackfield surge on goal, the Fawley players were happy to hear the referees whistle, and could celebrate a victory over their rivals.

Team -
Gilroy, Feeney, Harvey, K. Earl, Dickens, Downie, C.Earl, M.Hardiman, Walker, Mockridge, Gibbons.

Subs - B.Murph, Jennings, E.Earl, T.Hardiman
